About Lingoproz"So what business are you in?" "Oh, I do translations..." "No way - we needed someone just the other week and couldn't find anyone! Didn't know where to look really..." Lingoproz - A team of language professionalsThe Lingoproz team is a group of language professionals who in early 2009 identified a necessity for the language industry in South Africa to organise itself. Their personal experience had shown that clients found it hard to locate the services they needed. And vice versa, language practitioners like themselves often struggled to advertise successfully and reach their market. What perhaps made - and still makes - this even more difficult is the fact that the local industry is segmented into an abundance of different languages - from Afrikaans to Zulu and English to Xhosa, to name only a few. But it is precisely this challenge which also presents a huge strength and opportunity! ... with a common goal of uniting African linguists...The team therefore set out to create a language platform for colleagues in South Africa, and in time the entire continent, which would pool language services in one easy-to-find space and make it simple for customers to pick out just the one they needed. The aim is to cover the entire industry, with services covering diverse specialised fields from copywriting, interpreting, translations and language courses to editing, voiceovers and even language travel. A concept unmatched in an industry entirely underrepresented on the Internet! At the same time, the fact that so many linguists would be gathered in one place offered the perfect opportunity to develop a platform for colleagues to share and exchange useful information, to enjoy the benefits of belonging to a professional community. ... and providing a one-stop solution for customers!Lingoproz therefore developed a website with an extensive directory and integrated simple search at its core, allowing users to search or offer language services in South Africa and the rest of the continent. This main function was complemented by a terminology forum for fellow linguists to discuss terminology, grammar, idioms, culture etc. concerning their language in a circle of specialists. An additional language magazine in the form of a blog offers a selection of hand-picked language-related articles to enjoy and an opportunity for Lingoproz members to publish their own ideas. The platform aims to keep the community up-to-date about happenings in the sector with the calendar of events, provide support in daily challenges with the index of resources and, finally, it rounds off the information package with the encyclopaedia of languages and language services. More features are in the pipeline - so keep an eye out and watch the project grow! On a mission to make language services accessible in Africa!Meanwhile, the Lingoproz team continues its mission to make language services in Africa easily accessible and provide a platform to share and exchange information for language professionals, with a vision of facilitating communication and bridging language barriers throughout the continent.
